Playdate

A retro way to destress

I’m in a high-octane vortex 24/7 as a creative. That’s me in Paris on-the-go and loving life, but winding down at the end of the day is less predictable. My OFF-switch occasionally malfunctions and I find myself still buzzing when the rest of the world is sound asleep. I do the obvious things: meditate + eat healthy + stay fit, but my nervous system acts like an extravert and stays backlit. On a quest for calm, I remembered something I learned in school — Occam’s razor (all things being equal, the simplest solution is usually the right one). And therein lies the answer — GO BACK TO THE BASICS!

Cue the Slinky — Yes, that slinky—the iconic toy from childhood that everyone had in their home, playing with it always put me in the zone. The sound, the motion, the simplicity—mesmerizing then, still mesmerizing now, powered by physics that make you say WOW!

Slinky Styled On A Cocktail Table

Shoutout to Richard James, the American naval engineer who invented it in the 1940s. Genius. A true masterpiece! In adulthood, I use it to play, to relax, and as an unexpected styling object in my home.

Slinkys are easy enough to find, but some models don’t function like the iconic original — And I know from experience. The true test — Can it walk down a flight of stairs without skipping a beat? Fortunately, I scored a model by Popular Science that works like a charm — It’s available on Amazon so pick one up here, then schedule a playdate with yourself and send me a thank you email later — And if your note has the slinky typeface pictured that would be even greater :)
