The iChair
Part of the Reserved Seating Series, the iChair is an invitation to pause, breathe, and reconnect with your higher self. It challenges the idea that productivity defines our worth, encouraging us instead to measure our lives by the depth of our presence. Designer Ralph Caplan once observed: “A chair is the first thing you need when you don’t really need anything, and is therefore a peculiarly compelling symbol of civilization.” I couldn’t agree more and so the brief for the iChair is simple yet profound — Quiet the mind, still the body, and recognize yourself as a limitless, omnipresent superpower.
The iChair was conceived in 2023—the same year my corporate position (project manager) was eliminated after nearly two decades at a Fortune 500 company. Pursuing a similar role elsewhere felt like a betrayal, yet the path forward was unclear. Most of my career was spent in the fast-paced technology arm of the company so slowing down felt foreign, almost taboo—like stepping outside a world governed by acronyms, metrics and politics.
While pressing pause seemed to violate an unspoken societal rule that came with having a social security number, I leaned into a state of being with intention, choosing to sit in silence each day. And during these moments of stillness, my thoughts and emotions were allowed to surface and pass without judgment. Over time, a path forward began to emerge. The insights that surfaced were grounded in strength and clarity rather than doubt, suggesting they originated from a deeper intelligence—what I refer to as SOURCE.
The design of the iChair reflects this philosophy through radical simplicity. Each element is intentionally pared down to what feels most essential—an embodiment of the idea that less can reveal more.
An Apple AirTag, encased in clear housing, symbolizes the process of discovery—an ever-present metaphor for locating and strengthening one’s connection to the higher self. The phrase Space for Dialogue on the back reminds the occupant that access to inner guidance is always available. The typography displayed on the front of the chair—SOURCE—represents the universal intelligence that lives within each of us. The lettering is available in 3 bespoke colorways: Fire, Air, and Charcoal. A metal plate, visible when the iChair stands upright, contains usage details and comes in a silver magnesium finish. The complete series consists of 10 chairs, each identified by a number in the sequence 0–9. An oval line encircling the number indicates the chair’s position in the production process. A natural sheepskin overlay—optional but luxurious—adds warmth and comfort, softening the minimalist form while reinforcing the ritual of sitting.
Each iChair is priced individually, arrives fully assembled and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Just click here when you’re ready to take a seat!
Full Disclosure: Building a connection with the higher self is free and open source (pun intended) so check out this article for some of my design resources if you’re a DIYer that prefers to create your own chair. Try to spend at least 20 minutes a day in stillness. The silence may feel noisy at first—it certainly did for me. Dense emotions and restless thoughts often surface before they settle. But with patience and practice, clarity follows. This is a personal journey so be gentle with yourself, and keep showing up— This YouTube video (credit Abraham Hicks) is great inspo!
